One of the most interesting ways I've spent my spare time away, was with a small, and relatively unknown game titled VVVVVV from developer Terry Cavanagh.
I've heard a little about it and about 3 months ago, played the demo for it on Kongregate. I absolutely fell in love with the title, and vowed to buy it once I was able.
Thanks to the Steam Summer sale, and my flood of new games, I rediscovered PC gaming, and started to play a few indie titles, like Beat Hazard, Osmos, and AaaAaa~A Reckless Disregard for Gravity. This style of gameplay brought me back to the demo for VVVVVV, so I had to give it a shot.
I bought it from the website at:

(I think the URL is neat, so I decided to spell it out.)
The game is a great platformer that takes lots of skill to get even the simplest jumps done, since there's only 2 actions the main character can do, and that's either to move side to side, or flip gravity in one whole different direction.
(The name of the game is what spikes look like in these 2D platformers.)
The game itself presents a variety of small new gameplay elements like a line that immediantly flips your character, or an auto-scrolling room, just little things like that, that gives the game it's difficulty.
However, my major problem with it, is the duration of the game. I don't know if I'm just used to it from games like La-Mulana or Cave Story, but I found this game was really short; my last save before I finished the game was about 3 hours.
Regardless, if you really like challenging platformers such as La-Mulana (without the puzzles) or N+ (without the control), I'd recommend giving it a shot.
Final Evaluation: 3/5 (Fun, but much too short)
It's definately not a purchase for everyone, but I beg everyone to at least try the demo on Kongregate linked here.
